The Bua Story

We’re Tash & Bryn, and Derek & Michelle, the owners of this peaceful little hideaway.

Derek and Michelle’s journey began in Malawi back in 2014 while volunteering on a hyena research project in Majete. Evenings were spent around the campfire with locals and fellow volunteers—sharing stories, meals, and beers under the stars. It was during those nights that we fell in love with this incredible country and felt a growing desire to contribute in a meaningful way.

As we explored more of Malawi, we became deeply aware of both its potential and its challenges. After two years of listening, learning, and connecting with people, we founded a local charity to help support the communities we’d come to care about so deeply.

The story of Bua, however, began when we heard about the ambitious elephant translocation project African Parks was undertaking to Nkhotakota. Though we weren’t directly involved, we were drawn to the reserve and wanted to see it before the transformation.

From the moment we arrived, we were captivated – the river, the forest, the feeling of peace, it immediately felt like home. We knew we wanted to help preserve this special corner of Malawi and create a place where others could come and experience its magic too.

Though we don’t live here full-time, we’ve built an incredible team – the Bua family – who share our love for this place. They’re the heart and soul of the lodge, and we know they’ll make your stay something special and truly memorable.

Tash & Bryn became involved in the lodge in 2026, after a decade of visiting it as guests and recognising it as an incredibly special place. Tash has lived in Malawi most of her life, and Bryn is an “import” from the UK. They have two small children, Daphne and Sasha, who also love the bush, birding, and campfires.
